The family of a 90-year-old woman is calling for answers after a council speed bump left her with a brain bleed, broken neck and battered face. Fay Fagan was leaving the Ōtaki RSA, on the Kāpiti Coast, at about 6.50pm on Tuesday when it is believed she tripped on the recently installed bump in the dark and hit the tow-bar of a parked car with her head. Anne McEwan said her mum likely lay on the ground in the cold and dark for about 10 minutes, bleeding profusely, before she was discovered by another club patron. “They didn’t actually notice her, they said, until her feet moved … because she had dark clothes on and it was dark.” Kāpiti Coast District Council says the bumps were added to boost safety and will launch a new safety assessment of the site. McEwan said her mum went out “with a group of her lady friends” to have dinner and check in on the membership draw. After having a lemon, lime and bitters, Fagan left with a friend who continued down the road. Fagan was alone when she stumbled at the entrance to the neighbouring carpark where the bump was installed in early May. Her mum was taken to Palmerston North Hospital by ambulance – conscious but in shock. “They took her for a CT scan, and they said she’s got a brain bleed and also she’s got a neck injury. They mentioned she’s got something broken in the neck.” Despite the neck injury she could still move her arms and legs, she said. McEwan said given the age of many club members, recovery from such injuries would be “pretty horrific” if they fell too. It was “unbelievable” they installed the bump so close to the club, which had many elderly patrons. Council access and transport manager Glen O’Connor said judder bars and other safety improvements came after concerns were raised about cars speeding through the carpark between adjoining streets. “As the judder bars are quite narrow we used reflectorised yellow lines on either side of the bars, rather than a criss-crossed pattern used on wider judder bars. Judder bar signs were also installed.” The council was saddened by the news and their thoughts were with Fagan and her family, he said. They would carry out an additional safety assessment of the site. “We would also welcome a meeting with the family to learn more about what happened should they wish to discuss this with us.” McEwan said her mum would be 91 next month: she was still very active, enjoyed going out with friends and was heavily involved with the likes of the Ōtaki Bowling Club. “This could make a big change for her.” Fagan had no recollection of the incident.

A Melbourne man has faced court over the murder of a dumpling bar owner, found beaten to death in his own home. The body of 57-year-old Yoke Onn Chi was found by his son on January 31, about two hours after CCTV footage showed him leaving Northland Shopping Centre with a bag believed to contain the day’s takings from his business, China Bar. Alexander MinVui Wong, 40, was charged with his murder on Tuesday. The Reservoir man faced Melbourne Magistrates Court for a brief hearing on Tuesday afternoon, when his case was adjourned until October.

A Goldfields man who repeatedly groped a woman on a Qantas flight last year walked from court yesterday with a fine and a spent conviction after a guilty plea. Kevin Eric Davidson, 50, pleaded guilty to indecent assault at Kalgoorlie Magistrate’s Court. Davidson was arrested on a Qantas flight at Kalgoorlie-Boulder Airport in November after he grabbed the 35-year-old woman’s thigh multiple times despite repeated protests to stop. The court heard the flight had been delayed and in the four-hour wait Davidson had become extremely intoxicated. Defence lawyer Carmel McKenzie sad the offence was out of character for Davidson as he was not a frequent drinker and had no criminal record. “He has very limited recollection of the incident and is extremely apologetic,” she said. “In March as the lockdown occurred, Mr Davidson referred himself … to seek alcohol counselling. “He hasn’t been able to engage because effectively from the lockdown time he returned to his employment in a biosecurity zone … however he has indicated that he will, once the opportunity arises, he will take up that counselling.” Ms McKenzie urged the court to apply a spent conviction to the offence given a charge of indecent assault without context would hinder his employment and entrance to the Aboriginal communities he worked in. Police prosecutor Sen. Const. Matthew Hallsworth opposed the spent conviction given the repeated actions of Davidson and discomfort they caused. But Magistrate Erin O’Donnell found it unjust to penalise Davidson with more than a fine. Ms O’Donnell agreed to a spent conviction and issued a $1200 fine.

A doctor who survived cancer and chemotherapy says death cap mushroom poisoning was the most painful ordeal she has ever had. Dr Anna Whitehead saw some mushrooms near an oak tree in Raglan on the Easter long weekend. The Waikato public health doctor hadn’t planned to forage but decided to pick the mushrooms and check online if the ones she’d found near the waterfront on Cliff St were toxic. But she was so busy, partly due to commitments during the coronavirus pandemic, she forgot to check. She fried two mushroom caps and a stem, ate them with fish at lunch and felt fine – for a while. She woke up at 3am the next day. “I had this vomit which was unusual. It was a green liquid.” She went back to sleep but woke up again, and had “a huge amount” of green diarrhoea and vomit. “By eight in the morning I thought: I’m actually really unwell.”
